Landforms, Water, Climate, and Plant Life
Africa is the second largest continent on earth. It is shaped roughly like a soup bowl.
Read the 1st paragraph on page 112, and then answer the question: How is Africa shaped like a soup bowl? It is caused by the Atlas Mountains. The drankensburg range forms the southeast edge.



Mountain ranges (names & locations): Atlas Mountains (Sahara desert)
Ahaggar Mountain (between the Sahara and Sehel)
Mount Kilimanjaro (Serengeti Plain)

Rift (definition): are long, deep valley formed by the movement of the earth’s crust.


Sub-Saharan Africa: Africa south of the Sahara


Rivers: a stream of water flowing at a pace J


Niger River
Source of: water, food, and transportation,

Describe the Niger River’s middle section. There is low lying area of lakes and marshes. This watery region is called the inland delta. Though it looks much like the area where a river flows into the sea, it is hundreds of miles from the coast. Many animals and birds find food and shelter in the area.



West Africa’s Climates and Plants

Four different regions make up the area surrounding the Niger River. These regions run from east to west. The entire area is warm, but rain fall varies from north to south.

Describe the 4 regions:

  1. The northern band across west Africa is the southern part of the Sahara. This is the world largest desert. Rain is rare and the temp. can get up to 120o.
  2. The semiarid Sahel

Songhai Falls to Morocco
· When Askia lost his power to his son the other Askias ruled Songhai.
· The empire did not stay strong after though. It started to nibble away along the empire’s border.
· Morocco wanted to control the Saharan Salt mines so they had to invade the Songhai and they did that by using a terrible new weapon called the arquebus.
· The arquebus was an early form of a gun.
· The reason the Moroccans wanted control over the mines were because they needed money.
· Morocco had defended themselves from a large army
· Moroccans also defeated the Europeans.
· The Moroccan army went after the heart of Songhai in 1591.
· Not all of the people in the army were Moroccan.
· Half of the people were Spanish and Portuguese war prisoners.
